Russell Martin

Russell Martin is a Canadian former professional baseball catcher known for his defensive skills and leadership in Major League Baseball. Selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 17th round of the MLB Draft out of Chipola College, Martin advanced through the minor league system and made his major league debut with the Dodgers. He became the team's everyday catcher, earning a spot on the Topps All-Star Rookie Team in his first season.

Martin's breakout occurred in his second full season, when he hit .293 with 19 home runs and 89 RBI, was voted to start the All-Star Game, and became only the third catcher in history to win both the Rawlings Gold Glove Award and the Silver Slugger Award in the same season. He also earned the Tip O'Neill Award as the Canadian baseball player of the year. A four-time MLB All-Star, Martin played for the New York Yankees, succeeding Jorge Posada as the everyday catcher, as well as the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Toronto Blue Jays, before returning to the Dodgers to finish his career.

Over 14 seasons, Martin compiled strong defensive statistics, finishing with 1,579 games caught and 11,612 putouts. He led the league in assists by a catcher four times and was one of only 15 catchers in MLB history to record 10,000 career putouts. With the Pittsburgh Pirates, he won two Wilson Defensive Player of the Year awards, and with the Toronto Blue Jays, he helped end a postseason drought, guiding the club to consecutive American League Championship Series appearances. His five-year, $82 million contract with Toronto reflected the league's valuation of his leadership and two-way ability. Martin finished his career with 191 home runs and 101 stolen bases, making him one of only 21 players to total both 60 home runs and 60 stolen bases as a Dodger, and the only catcher among them.

Martin represented Canadian baseball internationally, competing for Team Canada in multiple World Baseball Classics and later serving as a coach with the Canadian national team. In recognition of his impact on the sport in Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays and Baseball Canada renamed the Junior National Team Most Valuable Player Award the Russell Martin Award, presented annually to the top player on Canada's junior national team. Martin was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, establishing his place among the most accomplished figures in Canadian baseball history.
