Russell Coutts

Sir Russell Coutts is recognized for his significant achievements in competitive sailing, with a record that includes Olympic success, multiple America's Cup victories, and a leadership role in advancing professional sailing to a global audience. Coutts has won the America's Cup five times, including three as skipper and twice as CEO. His three undefeated campaigns as helmsman make him the most successful America's Cup skipper in the event's history. He is also an Olympic champion, a 12-time world champion, and a two-time World Sailor of the Year.

Coutts demonstrated competitive instincts early in his career, becoming the single-handed world youth champion and winning an Olympic gold medal in the Finn class. He sailed in the Olympics despite medical challenges, securing gold in the single-handed Finn class. After finishing third with the national team in an America's Cup challenge, Coutts was rated the number one match racer in the world, achieving victories in events such as the Nippon Cup, the Bermuda Cup, and the World Match Racing Championships. Coutts' career is marked by decisive leadership and strategic moves. He and tactician Brad Butterworth left Team New Zealand to join Switzerland's Team Alinghi, leading to another America's Cup win. Later, as CEO and skipper of BMW Oracle Racing, Coutts oversaw the victory of USA over Alinghi 5, with the yacht's rigid wing sail providing a significant advantage. As CEO of Oracle Team USA, he played a key role in the team's comeback to defend the America's Cup in the event's longest match, earning recognition from skipper James Spithill and team owner Larry Ellison for his contributions.

Beyond racing, Coutts has focused on developing the sport's future. He became CEO of SailGP, collaborating with Larry Ellison to establish the global sailing championship.
