Rui Hachimura

Rui Hachimura is a Japanese professional basketball player and power forward for the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA. Hachimura has played a significant role in the development of Japanese basketball, leading Meisei High School to three consecutive All-Japan High School Tournament titles and representing Japan in FIBA under-17 and under-19 national team competitions. His high school performances earned him a spot in the Jordan Brand Classic, a high-profile high school all-star basketball game. Hachimura committed to play for the Gonzaga Bulldogs, becoming the fifth Japanese-born player to compete in NCAA Division I basketball.

At Gonzaga, Hachimura averaged 19.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in his junior season, earning consensus All-American honors and the Julius Erving Award as the nation's top small forward. He led Gonzaga to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and became the first Japanese player to compete in the NCAA men's tournament. Hachimura was also named a finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year award.

Hachimura was selected ninth overall by the Washington Wizards in the NBA Draft, becoming the first Japanese player drafted in the first round. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team after making an immediate impact in his debut season. During his tenure with the Wizards, Hachimura addressed mental health and injury challenges by sitting out a portion of the season, contributing to broader discussions about athlete well-being in professional sports.

After being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, Hachimura contributed to the team's success in the NBA Playoffs, including a 29-point performance against the Memphis Grizzlies and helping the Lakers reach the Western Conference Finals. He also played a key role in the Lakers' NBA Cup title. Under head coach JJ Redick, Hachimura has served as a starter and adapted his game as a floor spacer and weak-side cutter. Since joining the Lakers, Hachimura has continued to develop as a versatile player and an important member of the roster.
