Rui Hachimura

Rui Hachimura is a Japanese professional basketball player known for his contributions to both the NBA and international basketball. Hachimura led Meisei High School to three consecutive All-Japan High School Tournament titles and played a key role for the Japanese under-17 and under-19 national teams in FIBA competition. He joined Gonzaga as the fifth Japanese-born men's NCAA Division I player and became the first Japanese national to play in the NCAA Division I men's tournament. Overcoming initial language barriers, Hachimura developed into a leading player for Gonzaga, averaging 19.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a junior. His performance earned him recognition as a Consensus First Team All-American, the Julius Erving Award, WCC Player of the Year, and an All-WCC First Team selection.

Hachimura declared for the NBA Draft and was selected ninth overall by the Washington Wizards, becoming the second Japanese-born player drafted into the NBA and the first taken in the first round. He made his NBA debut with a double-double, scoring 14 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Hachimura was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team, ranking among the top rookies in scoring and leading in rebounds per game. During his time with the Wizards, he scored in double figures in 186 games, including 46 games with 20 or more points and seven games with 30 or more points.

Hachimura was later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played a significant role in the team's rotation during the NBA playoffs. He scored 29 points in his Lakers postseason debut and contributed defensively in the Western Conference Finals. Hachimura and the Lakers won the NBA In-Season Tournament, and he set a career high with 36 points in a win over the Utah Jazz, later recording 32 points, seven three-pointers, and 10 rebounds in a victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Internationally, Hachimura has been a prominent figure for Japanese basketball. He served as Japan's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics and scored 34 points in a game against Slovenia. Hachimura also competed at the Summer Olympic Games, helping to raise the profile of basketball in Japan and increase NBA viewership in the country.

Hachimura signed a two-year, $28 million contract with the LA Clippers, continuing his NBA career in Los Angeles. He averaged 17.5 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 56.9 percent from three-point range in the NBA playoffs, establishing himself as a strong postseason performer. Known by the nickname Black Samurai, a reference to Yasuke in Japanese history, Hachimura has played a significant role in advancing basketball in Japan and inspiring athletes globally.
