Ronald A. Heifetz

Ronald A. Heifetz is a pioneering leadership scholar best known for developing the concept of adaptive leadership. He serves as the King Hussein bin Talal Senior Lecturer in Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School, where he also founded the Center for Public Leadership. Through his teaching and research, Heifetz has shaped the study and practice of leadership worldwide.

He is also co-founder of Cambridge Leadership Associates (now part of Korn Ferry), extending his work beyond academia to advise governments, nonprofits, and corporations. His signature “case-in-point” teaching method uses real-time classroom dynamics as living case studies, challenging participants to confront the adaptive pressures inherent in leadership.

Heifetz first introduced his groundbreaking framework in "Leadership Without Easy Answers," a widely translated classic that remains influential decades after publication. With longtime collaborator Marty Linsky, he coauthored "Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive through the Dangers of Leading," which explores the personal risks leaders face when driving change. He later coauthored "The Practice of Adaptive Leadership: Tools and Tactics for Changing Your Organization," providing practical guidance for mobilizing people to tackle complex challenges. A frequent contributor to publications such as Harvard Business Review and The New York Times, Heifetz writes on leading amid crisis, uncertainty, and systemic change. His adaptive leadership model continues to influence fields ranging from public policy and education to healthcare and corporate strategy.

Beyond his academic career, Heifetz is a classically trained cellist who studied with renowned musician Gregor Piatigorsky—an experience that informs his view of leadership as both disciplined practice and artful performance.
