Robert Rodriguez

Robert Rodriguez is a filmmaker known for his work as a director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, editor, and composer. While attending the University of Texas at Austin, Rodriguez wrote the script for his first feature film, "El Mariachi," which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and became the lowest-budget movie released by a major studio. He received the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature for the film and chronicled his experiences in the book "Rebel Without a Crew," a guide for independent filmmakers.

"El Mariachi" led to two sequels, collectively known as the Mexico Trilogy: "Desperado" and "Once Upon a Time in Mexico." Rodriguez directed the horror-crime thriller "From Dusk Till Dawn" and the science fiction thriller "The Faculty," before achieving international box office success with "Spy Kids," which launched a franchise of sequels. The "Spy Kids" series became a $550 million franchise and earned recognition for its family-friendly appeal, including several ALMA Awards.

Rodriguez co-directed "Sin City" with Frank Miller and directed the "Planet Terror" segment of the double feature "Grindhouse." His work on "Sin City" received critical acclaim and multiple awards, including a Technical Achievement Award from the National Board of Review. He later returned to the franchise with "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For." Rodriguez also directed the science fiction epic "Alita: Battle Angel," produced by James Cameron, which earned over $405 million at the worldwide box office.

Rodriguez founded Troublemaker Studios, an Austin-based production facility that includes a visual effects house and music and publishing arms, contributing to Austin's status as a filmmaking hub. He launched El Rey Network, a cable TV channel focused on original programming and opportunities for diverse creators. Rodriguez, along with his sons, formed Double R Productions, a company producing projects across film, television, gaming, and interactive platforms.

Rodriguez's films have grossed more than $1.5 billion at the box office. His work extends into streaming and music video production, including directing Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's "Rain on Me" music video and an episode of "The Mandalorian" featuring Boba Fett. He also launched Brass Knuckle Films, an action film slate. Rodriguez is recognized for his contributions to independent filmmaking and his ability to work across mainstream and independent projects in the film industry.
