Robert Powell

Robert Powell, CFP®, RMA®, is an award-winning financial journalist, renowned for his contributions in esteemed publications such as MarketWatch.com, USA Today, TheStreet.com, The Wall Street Journal, Investor’s Business Daily and AARP. With a comprehensive understanding of retirement planning and investment management, he serves as the editor and publisher of TheStreet's Retirement Daily.

Most recently Powell was named a 2022 Robert N. Butler–Jack Rosenthal Age Boom Academy Journalist Fellow for the Columbia Journalism/Columbia Aging Center signature press training, Caregiving and Our Longer Lives: The $500B Question and he won the 2021 Radio Television Digital News Association and the National Endowment for Financial Education Excellence in Personal Finance Reporting Award.

In addition to his editorial role, Powell holds several prominent positions within the financial industry. He serves as the editor-in-chief of the Investments and Wealth Institute's (IWI) Retirement Management Journal, the world's first peer-reviewed journal solely dedicated to retirement income. He also hosts the Exceptional Advisor podcast by IWI.

As a co-founder of finStream.tv, a streaming channel focused on short-form personal financial education videos, he has been instrumental in its establishment. Furthermore, Powell contributes his expertise as an instructor in the Financial Planning Association’s Online Elder Planning Specialist program and is a co-owner of Plan for Life Now.

Powell is the cofounder of Parting Glass Productions, currently involved in co-producing a film in Ireland based on Fiche Blian ag Fás by Muiris Ó Súileabháin, demonstrating his passion for storytelling through diverse mediums.

Previously, Powell held influential positions, including editor of Retirement Weekly, a subscription publication launched in 2003 in collaboration with MarketWatch-Dow Jones. He also served as the curriculum director of Salem State University's Online Retirement Management Analyst program, showcasing his commitment to educating and training future retirement professionals.

His extensive experience extends to teaching engagements at the Boston University-Financial Planning Association Lifecycle Investing for Financial Planners program. Notably, Powell played a key role in the development and launch of the Financial Planning Association's Virtual Learning Center, Research Center, and public-facing website during his tenure as a content strategist from 2003 to 2011.

Recognized for his expertise in personal finance, Powell served as the executive producer of "More Than Money," a television series focused on personal finance in collaboration with Connecticut Public Television & Radio. As an accomplished author, he co-authored "Decoding Wall Street," an investment primer published by McGraw-Hill, and authored "20 Tips for Retirement Investors," published on MarketWatch.com.

Powell's previous positions include Managing Director at Acadient, where he and others were responsible for the creation and launch of the Boston University Online Program for Financial Planners, the Center for Fiduciary Studies' Accredited Investment Fiduciary™ Web-based Program, and the Lightbulb Press' 401(k) Basics Program. He also served as the director of marketing, training, and education for FundQuest, an investment management firm. As the founder of MoneCast.com, an online financial education company, Powell demonstrated his entrepreneurial acumen.

During his tenure as Managing Director and editor-in-chief of DALBAR, Inc. from 1993 to 2000, Powell oversaw the firm's multi-million-dollar publishing company, leading the publication of various notable financial periodicals such as Mutual Fund Market News, Variable Annuity Market News, The Journal of Mutual Fund Services, Registered Investment Advisor, Visionaries, and "Advice, Trust & Money."

While at DALBAR, Powell played a pivotal role in the creation and development of CompuServe WOW!'s personal finance and business website, as well as TheRightAdviser, a joint venture between DALBAR and Microsoft Corp.'s MoneyCentral, empowering consumers to find and select financial advisors effectively.

Before his successful career in financial journalism, Powell worked as a registered representative for DeanWitterReynolds and a sales representative for Marion Laboratories, providing him with valuable industry experience and insights.

Powell is a proud alumnus of Marquette University, holding a bachelor's degree, and Boston University College of Communication/School of Management, where he earned a master's degree in journalism. He also attended Boston University's Program for Financial Planners, a CFP® board-registered program, and obtained the prestigious CFP® designation.
