Robert Lopez is an American songwriter and librettist whose work has influenced both Broadway and Hollywood. Lopez is known for co-creating "The Book of Mormon" and "Avenue Q," as well as co-writing songs for Disney animated films "Frozen," its sequel "Frozen 2," and "Coco" with his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez. A Yale College graduate, Lopez has demonstrated a talent for musical storytelling that has contributed to his prominence in the entertainment industry.
Lopez's Broadway career began with his debut on "Avenue Q," a stage musical created with collaborator Jeff Marx. The show, which uses puppet characters and addresses adult themes, transferred from Off-Broadway to Broadway's John Golden Theatre. It achieved both critical and commercial success, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical and earning Lopez and Marx the Tony Award for Best Original Score. Lopez later collaborated with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of "South Park," on "The Book of Mormon." The production premiered at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and received multiple theater awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, as well as Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical for Lopez. The original cast recording won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. "The Book of Mormon" has grossed over $800 million and is among the longest-running Broadway shows, with more than 5,000 performances.
Lopez's partnership with Kristen Anderson-Lopez expanded his work into film. Together, they wrote songs for Disney Animation's "Frozen," including "Let It Go," which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Lopez became the youngest person to achieve EGOT status after winning the Oscar for "Frozen." He made history again when "Coco" featured the song "Remember Me," earning another Academy Award for Best Original Song and making Lopez the first double EGOT winner. He is the only person to have won all four major entertainment awards—Oscar, Tony, Grammy, and Emmy—more than once, with two Oscars, three Tonys, three Grammys, and four Emmys.
Lopez has also contributed to television and streaming platforms. He and Anderson-Lopez composed the theme music for the Marvel Cinematic Universe series "WandaVision" and wrote multiple versions of "The Ballad of the Witches' Road" for the spin-off "Agatha All Along." They adapted "Frozen" for the Broadway stage and co-created the Hulu original series "Up Here." In addition to his EGOT achievements, Lopez has received Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, Lucille Lortel, Frederick Loewe, and Edward Kleban awards. With ongoing global tours of "The Book of Mormon" and continued work in musical theater, film, and television, Lopez is recognized as a versatile and influential figure in contemporary entertainment, musical theater, and songwriting.
