Richard Engel Biography
Richard Engel is an American journalist and author who serves as the chief foreign correspondent for NBC News. Engel assumed this role after working as the network's Middle East correspondent and Beirut bureau chief. Prior to joining NBC, Engel reported on the Iraq War for ABC News as a freelance journalist based in Baghdad.
Engel has covered major international events including the Iraq War, the Arab Spring, and the Syrian Civil War. He is fluent in Arabic, Italian, and Spanish. Engel received the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism for his report "War Zone Diary."
Engel is the author of "A Fist in the Hornet's Nest," which details his experience covering the Iraq War from Baghdad. He also wrote "And Then All Hell Broke Loose," which chronicles his career as a freelance reporter in the Middle East.
Engel hosts the MSNBC special series "On Assignment with Richard Engel," which received a Peabody Award. His documentary "Ukraine: Freedom or Death" covers the early months of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Engel's work focuses on international conflict reporting, war correspondence, and Middle East affairs.
