Rex Ryan

Rex Ryan is a prominent figure in professional football, known for a career spanning nearly three decades as a coach and media personality. He is recognized for his tenure as a defensive coordinator and head coach, emphasizing aggressive, physical defenses. Ryan's coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Eastern Kentucky, followed by positions at New Mexico Highlands and Morehead State, and then two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals as defensive line and linebackers coach under his father, NFL coach Buddy Ryan. He later served as defensive coordinator at Cincinnati, Oklahoma, and Kansas State.

Before becoming a head coach, Ryan spent 10 seasons as an NFL assistant with the Baltimore Ravens, including several years as defensive coordinator, where he won a Super Bowl. He coached in Super Bowl XXXV with a defense regarded as one of the best in league history. Ryan received Assistant Coach of the Year awards from Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers Association. This combination of championship experience and defensive expertise led to his rise to the head coaching ranks.

Ryan's most successful seasons as a head coach came with the New York Jets, leading the franchise to consecutive AFC Championship appearances. Known for his outspoken approach, Ryan gained national attention on HBO's "Hard Knocks," which highlighted his personality. After his tenure with the Jets, Ryan became the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, where he spent two seasons. During his head coaching career, Ryan compiled a postseason record of 4-2, demonstrating his ability to guide teams in high-pressure situations.

Outside of coaching, Ryan has spoken candidly about personal challenges, including his decision to undergo LAP-BAND surgery and significant weight loss. He discussed his experiences with weight loss surgery at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, sharing insights that resonated beyond the football community.

Ryan joined ESPN and appears on "Sunday NFL Countdown," while also contributing to "Get Up," SportsCenter, ESPN Radio, and other platforms. He is the author of "Play Like You Mean It," co-written with Don Yaeger, which appeared on the New York Times best seller list. Ryan also made a cameo appearance in the Adam Sandler film "That's My Boy." With extensive experience in NFL coaching, football analysis, and sports media, Ryan remains a significant voice in the football industry.
