Remoshay Nelson

Capt. Remoshay Nelson became the first Black woman to serve with the Thunderbirds, the U.S. Air Force demonstration squadron, which had previously included only 12 African American members, all men, since its founding in 1953. Nelson, a Howard University alumna and member of Delta Sigma Theta, credits her experience at the historically Black university with shaping her perspective and confidence as an African American woman in aviation and military leadership.

Nelson's career includes extensive overseas service with the Air Force and her role as an officer with the Thunderbirds, known for their precision jet demonstrations. While serving as the Thunderbirds' public affairs officer, she participated in national flyovers honoring health care workers and communities, contributing to public outreach and engagement during the coronavirus pandemic.

Following her tenure with the Thunderbirds, Nelson has continued her service as a leader and mentor within the Air Force and in the government, sharing insights on resilience, representation, and teamwork with both military and civilian audiences. Her career in military aviation and her public-facing role with the Thunderbirds have positioned her as a recognized voice on breaking barriers, leadership under pressure, and encouraging the next generation of aviators and STEM professionals.
