Relient K

Relient K is a Christian pop-punk and alternative rock band known for its enduring presence in Christian music. The band was formed by lead singer, backing guitarist, and piano player Matt Thiessen, lead guitarist Matt Hoopes, and bassist Brian Pittman. The name Relient K was inspired by Hoopes' Plymouth Reliant K car, with the spelling intentionally altered to avoid trademark issues. After meeting in a church youth group during high school, the members recorded a demo that attracted the attention of Christian music artist TobyMac, who signed them to his label. Relient K's music is characterized by witty, tongue-in-cheek lyrics with a Christian focus and frequent pop culture references.

The band's debut album became the best-selling Christian rock debut of its release year. Their second studio album, "The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek," reached number 158 on the Billboard 200. The third studio album, "Two Lefts Don't Make a Right...but Three Do," marked a breakthrough in the Christian music scene, peaking at number 38 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Christian Albums chart, and earning Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. Relient K's sound blends pop punk, alternative rock, piano, and acoustic elements.

The band's commercial breakthrough came with the album "Mmhmm." The Dove Award-winning "Mmhmm" was the first of five albums to reach No. 1, and tracks such as "Be My Escape" and "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" achieved mainstream rock success. The album "Five Score and Seven Years Ago" debuted at No. 6 on the US Billboard 200 and included notable Christian radio singles "Forgiven" and "Give Until There's Nothing Left." Subsequent albums, including "Forget and Not Slow Down," continued to perform well, with three studio albums peaking in the top 15 of the US Billboard 200 chart.

Relient K has sold more than 2 million records, with three albums certified Gold by the RIAA. The band has released nine studio albums, seven EPs, two Christmas albums, and a collection of rarities. Relient K has received multiple awards, including a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album and two Dove Awards. Later albums include "Collapsible Lung" and "Air for Free." Throughout its career, Relient K has bridged Christian and mainstream music, building a diverse fan base and establishing itself as a defining band in the Christian pop-punk and alternative rock genres.
