Raz Simone

Raz Simone, born Solomon Samuel Simone, is an African-American hip-hop recording artist, songwriter, and record producer from Seattle, Washington. Simone's introduction to music began with poetry, which influenced his approach to rhythm and lyricism. He founded the independent label Black Umbrella, where he produces, raps, sings, designs graphics, and directs videos. Simone established himself in the Seattle music scene by releasing independent projects and reportedly owning a nightclub by age 19, before co-founding the Black Umbrella artist collective focused on community support and creative endeavors.

Simone partnered with Sam Lachow of Black Umbrella to create the five-song EP, "5 Good Reasons," which received positive reception and led both artists to tour. He followed this with his debut solo EP, "Solomon Samuel Simone." The release of this EP attracted the attention of 300 Entertainment executives Lyor Cohen, Todd Moscowitz, and Kevin Liles, resulting in a partnership between 300 Entertainment and Black Umbrella.

Simone's career momentum was briefly interrupted when he was charged with possession of a firearm while performing in New York City, though the firearm was legally owned. After the charges were dropped, Simone returned to music with the album "Cognitive Dissonance" and embarked on a 52-city tour with Rittz of Strange Music in support of the record.

The mid-2010s marked a pivotal period in Simone's career with the release of the "Cognitive Dissonance" series, which established his reputation as a serious and insightful hip-hop artist. "Cognitive Dissonance: Part 1" drew attention for its raw honesty and sophisticated production, highlighting Simone's versatility as he moved between rapping and singing. The subsequent release, "Cognitive Dissonance: Part 2," expanded on the themes of identity, societal issues, and personal struggles. Simone also released "Macklemore Privilege & Chief on Keef Violence," "Baby Jesus," and "Trap Spirituals," and was nominated for XXL's Freshman List.

A significant milestone in Simone's career included performing in seven cities as an opening act for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. His distinctive sound and thoughtful lyricism have earned him recognition as an influential independent hip-hop artist. Simone's discography, particularly the "Cognitive Dissonance" series, demonstrates a depth and complexity that resonates within the hip-hop community. Throughout his career, Simone has combined artistic vision with entrepreneurial drive, building an independent creative presence and establishing himself as a prominent voice in Seattle hip-hop.
