Ray Wylie Hubbard is a singer-songwriter and a founding figure of the Texas outlaw country movement, recognized for his distinctive voice in American roots music. Hubbard is known for his hard-edged character studies and meditations on life and relationships, contributing significantly to the outlaw country and Americana genres. In the 1970s, Hubbard joined Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson as part of the progressive country vanguard on the Texas music scene, blending rock 'n' roll influences with traditional country.

During his early career, Hubbard performed in coffeehouses, where he met Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Jerry Jeff Walker. Walker later recorded Hubbard's song, "Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother," which became an anthem of the outlaw country era and brought Hubbard commercial success.

Hubbard faced personal challenges, including struggles with addiction and family loss, but decided to pursue sobriety, crediting Stevie Ray Vaughan for supporting him in this journey. Hubbard has since spoken openly about his recovery, sharing his experiences with others.

Hubbard has appeared on late-night television shows, co-wrote a top-10 Hot Country song with Eric Church, was inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters' Association Hall of Fame, received a songwriting award from SESAC, and performed at the Grand Ole Opry. His memoir, written with Thom Jurek and titled "A Life…Well, Lived," chronicles his experiences in the music industry. Hubbard continues to perform and record, with albums such as "Reel 2 Reel 4 Real" exemplifying his enduring presence in the American roots music scene.
