Ray Mancini, known as "Boom Boom," is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1979 to 1992. Mancini has also established himself as an actor and sports commentator, contributing to both the boxing and entertainment industries. He inherited his nickname from his father, Lenny Mancini, a veteran boxer and top-ranked contender during the 1940s whose career was interrupted by injuries sustained in World War II. Mancini's amateur boxing career included 43 wins and seven losses, along with multiple Golden Gloves championships. Although he was defeated in the 14th round, Mancini secured the WBA lightweight crown seven months later by stopping Arturo Frias, a victory celebrated by his hometown of Youngstown during a period of economic hardship.

He held the WBA lightweight title for several years, but his tenure was marked by a tragic bout against Duk Koo Kim at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Mancini won by knockout in the 14th round, but Kim suffered fatal injuries, leading to significant changes in boxing regulations, including the reduction of championship bouts to 12 rounds.
