Randy Gradishar

Randy Gradishar is recognized as a leading linebacker in NFL history and a key figure in the Denver Broncos' "Orange Crush" defense. Gradishar was a three-year starter for the Ohio State Buckeyes and earned consensus All-American honors as a senior, also receiving Academic All-America recognition. Head Coach Woody Hayes described him as the best linebacker he coached at Ohio State. In his senior season, Gradishar finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting, a rare achievement for a defensive player. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, and the Ohio State end-of-season award for the most outstanding linebacker is named the Randy Gradishar Award.

Gradishar was selected 14th overall in the NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. Before his arrival, the team had only one winning season and no playoff appearances. With Gradishar as a defensive leader, the Broncos achieved seven winning seasons and four playoff appearances during his 10-year career. He led the Broncos in tackles for a franchise-record nine consecutive seasons and averaged 222 tackles per season during that period. Gradishar's performance contributed to the Broncos' first postseason berth and an appearance in Super Bowl XII against the Dallas Cowboys. He was voted NFL Defensive Player of the Year by AP, UPI, Pro Football Weekly, and NEA (George Halas Award), helping the Broncos to four playoff berths, two division titles, and the Super Bowl XII appearance.

Gradishar played 145 consecutive games, accumulating 2,049 tackles, seven Pro Bowl selections, two team MVP awards, and a Defensive Player of the Year award. He is one of only 10 linebackers with at least seven Pro Bowls, 20 interceptions, and 10 fumble recoveries; the other nine are all members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Analysts and scouts have noted his instincts and intelligence on the field, with Pro Football Weekly's personnel scout Joel Buchsbaum describing Gradishar as comparable to Jack Lambert and highlighting his football intelligence.

After retiring, Gradishar was nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame multiple times, reaching finalist status on several occasions. He was officially selected for induction, becoming the first member of the 1977 Denver Broncos to enter the Hall of Fame. Gradishar waited more than four decades after his playing career for this recognition. While the Orange Crush defense played a significant role in the Broncos' Super Bowl appearance, no member of the unit had previously been inducted into the Hall of Fame, unlike other notable defenses from the same era.

Off the field, Gradishar has contributed to community service and leadership. He is the founding president of the Denver Broncos Youth Foundation and has led the Phil Long Community Fund. Gradishar has visited U.S. military troops on goodwill tours in the Middle East and remains involved with veterans and their families. Colorado Governor Jared Polis proclaimed a day in his honor, and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston recognized his impact both on and off the field. Gradishar's career in professional football, combined with his commitment to community engagement, positions him as a respected figure in sports and public service.
