Rakim

Rakim, born William Michael Griffin Jr., is recognized as a pivotal figure in hip-hop, known for fundamentally reshaping the art of rapping. Throughout his career, he has been nicknamed the God MC, a reference to both his acclaimed status as an MC and the meaning of "Allah" in his stage name, which is the Arabic word for God.

Rakim first gained prominence as one half of the duo Eric B. & Rakim, releasing four albums: "Paid in Full," "Follow the Leader," "Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em," and "Don't Sweat the Technique." Their debut single, "Eric B. Is President" b/w "My Melody," was released on the Harlem-based indie label Zakia and became a street-level sensation, leading to a deal with 4th & Broadway. The debut album, "Paid in Full," has been named the greatest hip-hop album of all time by MTV and was listed by Time as one of the top albums of the 1980s. The duo's success continued with "Follow the Leader," further establishing their reputation in hip-hop. Following the platinum success of their albums, Eric B. & Rakim became the first rap act to sign a million-dollar record deal.

Rakim distinguished himself with a revolutionary approach to lyricism and delivery. His rhyming style deviated from the simple patterns of early hip-hop, employing a free-rhythm technique that drew comparisons to jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. Rakim was among the first to demonstrate the advantages of a writerly style, pioneering the use of internal and multisyllabic rhymes. Rapper Kool Moe Dee noted that before Rakim, the term "flow" was not widely used in hip-hop; Rakim's innovation helped define the concept. His unique rapping style has influenced artists such as GZA, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Tupac, Nas, Kool G. Rap, Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I.G., Eminem, and 50 Cent.

After parting ways with Eric B., Rakim launched a solo career that further solidified his legacy in hip-hop. He released "The 18th Letter," which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold by the RIAA. This was followed by "The Master" and "The Seventh Seal." Eric B. & Rakim have also been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Rakim's influence on hip-hop culture endures, with his lyrics studied in academic settings for their complexity and poetic nature. He and Eric B. reunited as a duo, performing at the Apollo Theater in New York City. Rakim's contributions continue to shape the evolution of hip-hop, and his work remains a subject of scholarly analysis and cultural discussion.
