Rachel Morrison

Rachel Morrison is an American cinematographer and director recognized for her contributions to film and television. Morrison studied film and photography at New York University before earning a Master of Fine Arts from the AFI Conservatory's graduate cinematography program. She began her career in television, with early documentary work—including cinematography on a film about high school education within the Rikers Island prison complex—earning her Emmy Award nominations. Morrison's approach, which she describes as subjective naturalism, is characterized by a photojournalistic instinct for capturing raw, unguarded emotion. This style has defined her work across independent film and major studio productions.

Morrison's career in independent cinema includes photographing several Sundance premieres, such as "Sound of My Voice," "Fruitvale Station," "Dope," and "Mudbound." Her collaboration with director Ryan Coogler began with "Fruitvale Station" and continued with "Black Panther," where she became the first woman to serve as cinematographer on a Marvel superhero film. Morrison has received recognition from Variety, Indiewire, and the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards for her achievements in cinematography and her support of women filmmakers.

Her work on Dee Rees's "Mudbound" led to several milestones: Morrison became the first woman to win the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Cinematographer, the first woman nominated for the feature category of the American Society of Cinematographers Outstanding Achievement Awards, and the first woman nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. The American Film Institute honored her with the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal for her achievements. Expanding her career, Morrison has directed episodes of television series including "American Crime Story," "The Mandalorian," and "The Morning Show." She made her feature directorial debut with "The Fire Inside," a biographical sports drama about boxing champion Claressa Shields, written by Barry Jenkins. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards and the Gotham Awards. Morrison has also directed "Love of Your Life," starring Margaret Qualley, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Aaron Pierre, and Gabriel Basso.
