Queens of the Stone Age

Queens of the Stone Age, commonly abbreviated as QOTSA, is an American rock band originating from the Palm Desert, California music scene. The group was formed by vocalist and guitarist Josh Homme after the dissolution of his previous band, Kyuss. Following a brief stint as a touring guitarist with Screaming Trees, Homme began a new project initially named Gamma Ray, releasing an eponymous EP before a legal dispute prompted a name change. Inspired by a nickname from producer Chris Goss, Homme renamed the band Queens of the Stone Age, aiming to reflect a style of rock music that balances heavy riffs with melodic sensibilities. The band's self-titled debut album featured Homme performing most instruments alongside former Kyuss drummer Alfredo Hernández, establishing a hypnotic, riff-driven sound influenced by krautrock and the desert rock genre.

Queens of the Stone Age gained broader recognition with their major-label debut, "Rated R," which highlighted their fusion of gritty guitars and psychedelic elements. Their third album, "Songs for the Deaf," marked a commercial breakthrough, featuring Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, as well as Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan. Singles such as "No One Knows" and "Go with the Flow" propelled the band into prominence within the modern rock landscape. Subsequent releases, including "Lullabies to Paralyze" and "Era Vulgaris," solidified the lineup with Homme, guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, bassist Michael Shuman, multi-instrumentalist Dean Fertita, and drummer Jon Theodore.

Throughout its career, Queens of the Stone Age has been recognized for collaborating with a diverse range of musicians and for exploring new sonic territories within alternative and hard rock. The sixth album, "...Like Clockwork," became the band's first to reach number one on the Billboard 200 and received three Grammy nominations, including Best Rock Album. The album was noted for its introspective tone, influenced by Homme's personal experiences with health challenges. The band continued with "Villains," produced by Mark Ronson, which topped Billboard's Top Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts and earned another Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. The eighth studio album, "In Times New Roman...," received favorable reviews and an additional Grammy nomination, underscoring the band's ongoing creative evolution.

Queens of the Stone Age has accumulated nine Grammy nominations across categories such as Best Hard Rock Performance, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Performance, and Best Rock Song. Known for dynamic live performances and a sound that blends blues, electronica, stoner rock, and krautrock, the band remains a significant presence in the hard rock and alternative rock genres. Anchored by Homme's distinctive falsetto and unconventional guitar work, Queens of the Stone Age continues to influence and shape the landscape of modern rock music.
