Prometheus Brown, born George Quibuyen and also known by earlier stage names Geologic and Geo, is a Filipino-American rapper, DJ, and writer recognized for his contributions to Pacific Northwest hip-hop. Brown is best known as the vocalist of the Seattle duo Blue Scholars, which he formed with DJ and producer Sabzi while both were students at the University of Washington. The name Blue Scholars is a play on the term "blue collar," referencing workers who often earn hourly wages for manual labor.
With Blue Scholars, Brown helped shape a sound that is politically engaged and rooted in the Seattle region. The group’s music and lyrics frequently address socioeconomic struggles, authority, and youth empowerment, drawing from Brown’s activism within the Filipino American community and his engagement with issues such as immigration, racism, and U.S. imperialism in the Philippines. Blue Scholars released three full-length albums, including "Bayani," a title that means "heroes of the people" in Tagalog and "the Word" in Persian. The group received top honors in the hip-hop category of the Seattle Weekly Music Awards Poll and were the top vote-getters overall. Blue Scholars performed more than 400 shows alongside artists such as Kanye West, De La Soul, Nas, and Common, and headlined the Northwest Hip Hop festival The Program, selling out five consecutive nights.
Beyond Blue Scholars, Brown has pursued collaborative and solo projects. He joined Beatrock Music and, with labelmate Bambu, released the album "Prometheus Brown and Bambu Walk into a Bar." With DJ Nphared, the trio became The Bar and released the "Barkada" LP and "Son of Barkada" EP. As a solo artist, Brown has worked on a series of solo EPs. His writing extends beyond music, with op-ed contributions to Al-Jazeera and The Seattle Times, including an editorial rap on gun violence that was nominated for an Online Journalism Award.
Brown has also expanded his platform as a DJ and broadcaster, hosting the Thursday/Friday Overnight show at KEXP after serving as a fill-in DJ for programs such as Variety Mix, Eastern Echoes, and Street Sounds. His project "Brownouts" serves as a multidisciplinary space encompassing his work as a rapper, DJ, writer, cultural worker, cook, and critic. Brown is an advocate for the Filipino community worldwide and a vocal critic of U.S. foreign policy, immigration laws, and corporate practices by Western businesses. Through his work in hip-hop, broadcasting, and writing, Brown emphasizes the connection between music, community, history, and social change.
