Professor Andreas Dengel

Andreas Dengel is executive director of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence in Kaiserslautern and professor of computer science at the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau. Dengel leads the Smart Data and Knowledge Services research area and the Deep Learning Competence Center at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. His career includes positions at IBM, Siemens, and a guest research stay at Xerox PARC in Palo Alto. He was appointed to the Chair of Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and became scientific director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, managing the Smart Data and Knowledge Services research area.

Dengel’s research encompasses machine learning, pattern recognition, quantified learning, data mining, semantic technologies, and document analysis. He has contributed to the application of artificial intelligence in medicine, biotechnology, and climate change. Dengel initiated and leads the Deep Learning Competence Center at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, which was recognized by NVIDIA as part of the NVAIL Excellence Program. He was recognized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as one of the most influential scientists in the history of artificial intelligence in Germany for his work in document analysis.

Dengel has written or edited 14 books and co-authored more than 600 peer-reviewed scientific publications, several of which have received Best Paper Awards. He has chaired international conferences and serves on editorial boards of journals and book series. Dengel received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition. He is a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, chairman of the Flexible Factory Partner Alliance, and a member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering.

Dengel holds a professorship in the Department of Computer Science and Intelligent Systems at Osaka Metropolitan University and was named Distinguished Honorary Professor. He received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon from the Japanese government for his contributions to academic exchange between Japan and Germany in artificial intelligence. Dengel is also a recipient of the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Dengel is the founder of several start-ups and advises scientific institutions, research programs, and ministries in Germany and internationally. He was a member of the National IT Summit's working group on service- and consumer-friendly IT, advising the German government on information technology. Dengel was appointed AI Ambassador of Rhineland-Palatinate by the state government. His work bridges artificial intelligence research, industry, and policy on a global scale.
