Plies

Algernod Lanier Washington, known professionally as Plies, is a rapper and songwriter recognized for his influence in Southern hip-hop. Plies established the independent record label Big Gates Records with his stepbrother Ronnell Lawrence Lavatte. Initially not intending to pursue a rap career, Washington recorded the chorus to the indie single "Tell Dem Krackers Dat" after the original artist was unable to deliver it, leading to regional recognition and attention from Slip-N-Slide Records in Miami.

After signing with Slip-N-Slide Records, Washington secured a joint venture with Atlantic Records, which led to significant commercial success. His debut album, "The Real Testament," reached number two on the US Billboard 200 and featured the singles "Shawty" with T-Pain and "Hypnotized" with Akon. The single "Shawty" topped the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart and reached number nine on the Hot 100. "The Real Testament" earned Platinum certification from the RIAA, and his follow-up album, "Definition of Real," also peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold.

Following his debut, Washington released "Definition of Real" and "Da REAList," and his fourth studio album, "Goon Affiliated," topped the Billboard Rap chart and reached number five on the Top 200. The single "Bust It Baby Part 2," featuring Ne-Yo, achieved number one status. Washington later released "Purple Heart," preceded by mixtapes including "I Fuck with the DJ," "Aristotle," "On Trial," and "Da Last Real Nigga Left." Throughout his career, Washington has maintained a distinct voice in the hip-hop industry and built a dedicated fan base.

In addition to his music, Washington has become a prominent social media commentator, addressing a range of topics and connecting with a diverse audience. During the presidential election cycle, he was recognized for his influential online commentary on political issues. His candid video commentaries have resonated with viewers, highlighting his ability to engage audiences beyond music. Washington and his brother established the Big Gates and Plies Power of Visions Foundation, which focuses on promoting a more functional, productive, and just community.
