Phil Bernstein

Phil Bernstein, FAIA, RIBA, LEED AP, is an architect, technologist, and educator widely recognized for his influence on the future of architectural practice. He is currently a faculty member and Deputy Dean at the Yale School of Architecture, where he has taught since 1989. His courses focus on professional practice, project delivery, technology, AI, and ethics. He has been named one of the “30 Most Admired Educators in Architecture” by DesignIntelligence.

Phil previously served as Vice President at Autodesk, where he led strategy for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, including the development of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the Revit platform. Before his work in technology, he was an associate principal at Cesar Pelli & Associates (now Pelli Clarke & Partners), where he managed projects such as Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, the Mayo Clinic, and corporate headquarters for firms like Goldman Sachs and UCLA.

He is the author of Architecture | Design | Data – Practice Competency in the Era of Computation and Machine Learning: Architecture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, and speaks frequently on the convergence of design, technology, and ethics.

Phil is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council, and a former chair of the AIA National Contract Documents Committee. He holds a B.A. and Master of Architecture from Yale and is a licensed architect in California.
