Phantogram Biography
Phantogram is the Saratoga Springs, New York-based duo of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, known for blending hazy dream pop, dark atmospheres and hard-hitting rhythms into a distinctive, genre-defying sound.
Formed in 2007, Phantogram emerged from a longtime friendship between Barthel and Carter, who met in junior high school. After Barthel pursued visual arts studies and Carter performed with the experimental band Grand Habit, the pair reunited to develop beat-driven songs Carter had begun recording. Originally performing locally under the name Charlie Everywhere, they later adopted the name Phantogram — inspired by the optical illusion — after signing with BBE Records.
In 2009, the duo self-released the five-song “Phantogram EP,” followed by “Running From the Cops” on BBE Records. Their debut full-length album, “Eyelid Movies,” was released in Europe in September 2009 and in the United States in February 2010. The album earned favorable reviews and featured standout tracks including “Mouthful of Diamonds,” “When I’m Small” and “As Far As I Can See.”
Phantogram has toured extensively, supporting artists such as Metric, The xx, J-Live and Brazilian Girls, and sharing the road with The Slip, Zero 7 and Minus the Bear.
