Peter L. Scher is vice chairman of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and a member of the firm's Operating Committee. Scher has overseen the firm's global Corporate Responsibility department, including public policy efforts, the J.P. Morgan International Council, and Morgan Health, a business unit focused on improving healthcare quality for employees and investing in new models for employer-based healthcare delivery in the United States. He also served as the firm's senior executive in the Mid-Atlantic Region, overseeing commercial banking, asset management, investment banking, and consumer banking throughout Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
Scher was nominated by President Clinton and confirmed by the United States Senate as U.S. Special Trade Ambassador. In this role, he served as one of the lead U.S. negotiators on China's entry into the World Trade Organization. He also served as chief of staff for the U.S. Trade Representative and the U.S. Department of Commerce, as well as staff director for the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and chief of staff to former U.S. Senator Max Baucus. This decade of public service provided Scher with experience in international trade, domestic policy, and the intersection of government and business.
Before joining JPMorgan Chase, Scher was managing partner of the Washington, D.C., office of Mayer Brown LLP, where he was a partner and previously chaired the firm's Government and Global Trade Practice. During his legal career, he was recognized by Washington Life Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the U.S. capital region and was selected by Chambers USA as one of the leading lawyers for multiple years.
Scher is known for developing JPMorgan Chase's $200 million investment strategy in Detroit, which began as a $100 million commitment to economic development and neighborhood stabilization following the city's bankruptcy. As chairman of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, he led the firm's investment in Detroit's revitalization, which Fortune Magazine highlighted in its ranking of JPMorgan Chase as Number 1 on its list of companies Changing the World. Scher has spoken publicly about the firm's investments in Detroit and other urban environments, and has addressed how artificial intelligence, data, and innovation are transforming healthcare delivery.
Beyond his work at JPMorgan Chase, Scher is a co-founder of the Greater Washington Partnership, a private-sector organization, and served as its board chair. He serves on several boards, including Centivo, CLEAR, the Board of Advisors for the Center for New American Security, and the Advisory Board for the Stanford Emerging Technology Review. After 18 years with JPMorgan Chase, Scher transitioned to the role of senior adviser to CEO Jamie Dimon and other senior leaders.
