Peter Sands

Peter Sands, serving as the Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria since 2018, has made significant contributions to the organization. During his tenure, Sands achieved record replenishments for the Global Fund, accumulating US$14.02 billion in 2019 and US$15.7 billion in 2022. In addition to his role at the Global Fund, Sands has shared his expertise on various boards and commissions, including the International Gender Champions and the Institute of International Finance.

Prior to his role at the Global Fund, Sands was the CEO of Standard Chartered from November 2006 to June 2015. Notably, he participated in creating the British bank rescue plan that was utilized worldwide during the financial crisis. Upon his departure from Standard Chartered, Sands was recognized for his philanthropy, donating a £2.1 million bonus to charity. His leadership also saw the Global Fund successfully raise its target of €12 billion in 2019 and reach a record-breaking $15.7 billion in its Seventh Replenishment in 2022.

Moreover, Sands's commitment to global health extends beyond his role at the Global Fund. In 2016, he chaired the International Commission on a Global Health Risk Framework for the Future under the National Academy of Medicine. As a member of the Pandemic Preparedness Partnership, Sands has been instrumental in advising the G7 presidency on pandemic preparedness. His involvement in initiatives to prepare for pandemics suggests a practical understanding of the cost-effective benefits of such preparations. Sands also holds memberships on influential boards and committees, including the Institute of International Finance and the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
