Peter Lee

Dr. Peter Lee is a leader at the intersection of artificial intelligence, computing, and medicine. As president of Microsoft Science, Lee is responsible for accelerating discovery in the physical, biological, and medical sciences through artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. He oversees Microsoft Research's 13 global laboratories, advancing artificial intelligence, computer science, health, and life sciences, and supporting the development of research-driven products that expand human knowledge.

Lee's work translating research into commercial applications includes deep neural networks for simultaneous language translation in Skype, next-generation Internet of Things technologies, experimental undersea datacenters, augmented-reality experiences for HoloLens, digital storage in DNA, and social chatbots.

Before joining Microsoft, Lee served as a professor and head of the computer science department at Carnegie Mellon University. He also held the position of vice provost for research, focusing on software reliability, program analysis, security, and language design, and is known for co-developing proof-carrying code techniques for software security. Lee later founded and directed a major technology office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), supporting research in computing and related fields. At DARPA, he led the DARPA Network Challenge, an experiment in social media and open collaboration that engaged millions worldwide in a search for red weather balloons.

Lee has contributed to national policy, serving on the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity and testifying before both the U.S. House and Senate committees. He has led studies for the National Academies on the economic impact of federal research investments. Lee is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and serves on the boards of several institutions in artificial intelligence and medicine, including the Board of Trustees of Mayo Clinic and the Board of Directors of Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. He is also a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery.

Lee co-authored the book "The AI Revolution in Medicine: GPT-4 and Beyond" with Carey Goldberg and Dr. Isaac Kohane. He was among a group at Microsoft with early access to GPT-4 for evaluation and experimentation, providing him with insight into the technology's impact on healthcare. Lee continues to explore how patients, providers, and medical professionals use generative artificial intelligence in medicine. TIME Magazine named Lee one of the 100 most influential people in health and life sciences.
