Peter Howitt Biography
Peter Howitt is a Canadian economist best known for his groundbreaking work in macroeconomics and growth theory, particularly his collaboration with Philippe Aghion on the economics of innovation and creative destruction. He is Professor Emeritus of Economics at Brown University, where he taught for over two decades, and formerly served on the faculty of the University of Western Ontario.
Howitt’s research focuses on the dynamics of technological change, productivity, and economic policy. Alongside Aghion, he co-developed the Schumpeterian growth theory, which explains how innovation drives long-term economic progress. Their influential book, Endogenous Growth Theory, remains a cornerstone of modern economic thought.
A fellow of the Econometric Society and the Royal Society of Canada, Howitt has received numerous honors for his contributions to economics and his insights into the relationship between innovation, policy, and growth.
