Penn Masala

Penn Masala is recognized as the world's first South Asian a cappella group, founded at the University of Pennsylvania by students seeking to express their subcontinental heritage through unaccompanied vocals. The group distinguished itself by fusing Hindi music with Western pop structures, creating original medleys that resonated with both diaspora audiences and listeners in India. Their performances feature layered harmonies, beatboxing, and choreographed stage presence, all without backing tracks or instruments, establishing a hallmark style in the collegiate a cappella scene.

In its early years, Penn Masala distributed tape recordings to South Asian student societies across the northeastern United States and Canada, building a grassroots following. The group released its debut album, "Awaaz," which included a cappella covers of songs such as "Mere Sapno Ki Rani" and "Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam." This release solidified their role in collegiate South Asian a cappella. Over the years, Penn Masala has developed an extensive discography, including albums such as "Pehchaan," "Panoramic," "Kaavish," "Yuva," "Musafir," and "Midnight Oil."

Penn Masala's reach extends beyond campus stages. The group has performed at the White House for events including the signing of the executive order establishing the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and a Diwali celebration. They have also performed for the Indian Filmfare Awards and for notable figures such as Henry Kissinger, Ban Ki-moon, Reliance Group Chairman Mukesh Ambani, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Penn Masala appeared in the movie "Pitch Perfect 2" as the Indian national team at the world a cappella championship. The film's soundtrack featured the group's Hindi version of "Any Way You Want It" and won Best Soundtrack at the American Music Awards. The group has also performed at the Indian Olympic House in Paris, presenting shows at India House, Team India's base for the Paris Olympics.

Known for its fusion of Western music and Bollywood hits, Penn Masala has built a significant online presence, with a large following on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. As pioneers in South Asian-Western fusion a cappella, the group has attracted fans from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
