Peggielene Bartels

Peggielene Bartels, known internationally as King Peggy, is recognized for her leadership in African governance and community development. Bartels transitioned from her role at the Ghanaian Embassy in the United States, where she worked for nearly three decades, to become the first female king of Otuam, a Ghanaian community of approximately 7,000 people. Following the death of her uncle, Bartels was selected as his successor through traditional rituals. In Otuam, "king" is the customary title for the community's ruler, and Bartels has assumed this position, which carries the highest executive authority.

Bartels balances her responsibilities between her administrative duties at the Ghanaian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and her leadership role in Otuam, dedicating one month each year to adjudicate matters in the community. She maintains daily communication with her regent and elders in Otuam, often waking at 1 a.m. to fulfill her obligations as king. Her leadership approach emphasizes service, focusing on addressing the community's needs and improving quality of life.

During her reign, Bartels has initiated significant changes in Otuam. She has raised funds and secured donors to establish a water system, reducing the burden on children who previously traveled long distances for fresh water. Bartels has supported families with school fees, introduced computers to classrooms, and facilitated the provision of the community's first ambulance and access to clean, running water. She has also reformed the management of land fees, ensuring they are deposited directly into a rural bank account for community benefit. Bartels is committed to empowering women and advocates for increased female participation in leadership roles across Africa.

Bartels co-authored the book "King Peggy: An American Secretary, Her Royal Destiny, and the Inspiring Story of How She Changed an African Village" with Eleanor Herman. The book details her journey, the challenges she faced, and the impact of her leadership on Otuam. The story has attracted attention from the film industry, with rights acquired for a potential adaptation. Bartels has discussed her experiences on platforms such as The Colbert Report and has addressed audiences at institutions including the Library of Congress.

After retiring from the Ghanaian Embassy, Bartels established a travel agency offering guided tours of Ghana and supporting local development initiatives. Her journey from embassy secretary to community leader highlights themes of leadership, diversity and inclusion, Black heritage, and personal growth. Bartels is a keynote speaker on topics including business, motivational leadership, and community empowerment.
