Paulina Alexis

Paulina Jewel Alexis, also known by her Nakota name Wǎgíyaŋ Čížaŋ (Young Eagle), is a First Nations (Alexis Nakota Sioux) actress recognized for her contributions to Indigenous storytelling in film and television. Alexis developed an interest in acting as a child, creating home movies with her brothers, which led to her pursuit of professional roles. Her connection to her cultural heritage informs her approach to performance and character development.

Alexis began her professional acting career with roles in the Canadian film "Beans" and the feature film "Ghostbusters: Afterlife." These projects established her presence in both Indigenous and mainstream productions. Her breakthrough role came as Willie Jack in the FX series "Reservation Dogs." The series, co-created by Taika Waititi and Sterlin Harjo, is noted for its all-Indigenous writer and director team. Alexis's portrayal of Willie Jack, a character reimagined for her after her audition, drew critical attention and contributed to the show's impact on Indigenous representation in Hollywood.

"Reservation Dogs" received a Peabody Award, and Alexis was part of the ensemble cast honored with the Independent Spirit Award for Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series. She also received nominations for the Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In addition to her work on "Reservation Dogs," Alexis appeared as Immpy in "Bones of Crows," a drama exploring the experiences of an Indigenous family affected by the Indian residential school system, as well as its television mini-series adaptation. She has contributed voice work to "Inkwo for When the Starving Return," a stop-motion animated short based on Indigenous lore, and made a guest voice appearance on the animated series "Bob's Burgers."

With a portfolio spanning drama, comedy, and animation, Alexis is known for her commitment to authentic Indigenous representation in the entertainment industry. Her work continues to contribute to public discourse on Indigenous storytelling and representation in film and television.
