Of Irish, English, and Māori descent (Ngā Mahanga a Tairi), Spiers grew up on the southwest coast of the North Island in Aotearoa/New Zealand before emigrating to the United Kingdom in his late 20s. He is a regular surfer, trail runner, and travel enthusiast.
