Paul Goldberger

Paul Goldberger is a prominent voice in architecture, urbanism, and design. Goldberger served as the architecture critic for The New Yorker, following a 25-year career at The New York Times, where his architecture criticism was recognized with the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism. He is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair.

Goldberger began his career at The New York Times after graduating from Yale University, where he studied art history. Early in his tenure, he was assigned to write the obituary of architect Louis Kahn. He was later named an architecture critic, working alongside Ada Louise Huxtable. At The New Yorker, Goldberger wrote the "Sky Line" column, analyzing contemporary buildings, urban development, and design trends. He has also held the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at The New School in New York City and served as dean of Parsons School of Design, a division of The New School.

Goldberger is the author of several books, including "Ballpark: Baseball in the American City," "Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry," "Building with History," "Why Architecture Matters," "Building Up and Tearing Down," and "DUMBO: The Making of a Neighborhood and the Rebirth of Brooklyn." His chronicle of the rebuilding of Ground Zero, "Up from Zero: Politics, Architecture, and the Rebuilding of New York," was named one of The New York Times Notable Books. His biography of Frank Gehry stands as the first full-length critical biography of the architect.

Goldberger's writing has earned him honors such as the President's Medal of the Municipal Art Society of New York, the medal of the American Institute of Architects, the Medal of Honor of the New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation, the Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award. He was named a Literary Lion by the New York Public Library.

Goldberger lectures widely on architecture, design, historic preservation, and cities, and has taught at the Yale School of Architecture, the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, and The New School. He appears frequently on film and television to discuss art, architecture, and cities, and served as host of a PBS program on architect Benjamin Latrobe. He has also served as an advisor on architect selection and project design for institutions including The Obama Presidential Center, The New York Public Library, The Morgan Library, Harvard University, Cornell University, the Carnegie Science Center, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Glenstone Museum. Goldberger is recognized for translating the complexities of the built environment into accessible prose, contributing to public understanding of architecture and urban life.
