Paul Azinger

Paul Azinger is recognized in professional golf for his achievements as both a player and a broadcaster. After competing as a member of the Florida State University golf team, Azinger secured 17 worldwide wins as a professional, including 12 PGA Tour victories and the PGA Championship at Inverness Club in Ohio. He claimed his only major title on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with Greg Norman. Azinger reached a world ranking of No. 4 and was named PGA Player of the Year. He also finished one shot behind Nick Faldo in the Open Championship.

Shortly after his PGA Championship win, Azinger was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in his right shoulder. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments before returning to competition. Azinger received the Golf Writers Association of America's Ben Hogan Award, which recognizes a professional golfer who remains active in the sport despite serious illness or physical handicap. He chronicled his experience in the book "Zinger." Azinger returned to the winner's circle at the Sony Open in Hawaii at age 40.

Azinger's influence on the Ryder Cup is notable. He represented the United States in four Ryder Cup teams and later captained the squad to a 16.5–11.5 victory over Europe at Valhalla Golf Club, implementing a "pod" system to foster team cohesion. This strategy, inspired by team-building techniques used by Navy SEALs, grouped players by personality type. Azinger detailed this approach in the book "Cracking the Code: The Winning Ryder Cup Strategy: Make It Work for You." He also contributed to changes in the Ryder Cup qualification system and led the Americans to a rare victory against Europe.

Following his playing career, Azinger became a television analyst, serving as the lead golf analyst for ABC, ESPN, Fox Sports for USGA Championships, and NBC Sports, where he replaced Johnny Miller as the network's lead golf analyst. He also contributed to Golf Channel news coverage from major events and works as a television analyst for PGA Tour Champions. Azinger is known for his direct analysis of golfers' performances and strategies, drawing on his experience in professional golf.

Azinger received the Payne Stewart Award from the PGA Tour, which recognizes character, sportsmanship, and charitable commitment. He and his wife, Toni, established the Azinger Family Compassion Center, which provides food, clothing, and household supplies to families in Manatee County, Florida, and supports nonprofit partners in the Bradenton-Sarasota area. Azinger continues to be a prominent figure in golf, both on and off the course.
