Patrick Stump

Patrick Stump is best known as the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and primary composer for the American rock band Fall Out Boy. With his distinct voice, musical versatility, and songwriting talent, Stump has played a pivotal role in shaping the band's success while also forging a unique path as a solo artist and producer. He is also a record producer, music critic, movie and television soundtrack composer.

Stump grew up in a musically inclined family—his father was a folk singer—Stump was exposed to various genres from an early age. He originally played drums and was heavily influenced by punk, soul, and jazz music. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he auditioned as a drummer for a new band being formed by Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz. Instead, his remarkable vocal ability led him to become Fall Out Boy’s lead singer and rhythm guitarist.

Fall Out Boy formed in 2001 and quickly gained a following in Chicago’s underground punk scene. Their breakthrough came with their 2005 album From Under the Cork Tree, featuring the hit singles Sugar, We’re Goin Down and Dance, Dance. Stump’s dynamic vocal range, combined with Wentz’s emotive lyrics, became a defining element of the band’s sound. Subsequent albums such as Infinity on High (2007), Folie à Deux (2008), and their post-hiatus releases Save Rock and Roll (2013) and American Beauty/American Psycho (2015) showcased Stump’s evolution as a musician, incorporating elements of pop, R&B, and electronic influences. His ability to blend various genres into Fall Out Boy’s music has been instrumental in their continued success.

During Fall Out Boy’s hiatus (2009-2013), Stump embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album Soul Punk in 2011. The album highlighted his love for funk, R&B, and pop, demonstrating his ability to step outside the rock genre. Though commercially underrated, Soul Punk received critical acclaim for its ambitious production and Stump’s multi-instrumental talent—he played nearly every instrument on the album.

Stump has also collaborated with numerous artists, producing music for acts like Cobra Starship and Gym Class Heroes, and even contributing to movie and video game soundtracks. Patrick Stump’s impact on music extends beyond Fall Out Boy’s discography. His distinctive, soulful voice and genre-blending style have influenced many modern pop-punk and alternative artists.
