Patrick McDowell

Patrick McDowell is a British sustainable luxury fashion designer recognized for his contributions to reshaping the fashion industry through circular design and ethical practices. McDowell first gained attention with a graduate collection crafted from repurposed Swarovski crystals and Burberry fabric. He studied at Central Saint Martins, where he completed the BA (Hons) Fashion Design: Womenswear course, supported by a scholarship from the British Fashion Council and a paid placement at Burberry. During his studies, McDowell observed significant textile waste in the industry, prompting him to request and receive surplus fabric from Burberry for his graduation collection.

After graduating, McDowell established his eponymous label, focusing on limited-edition and made-to-order collections constructed from recycled and responsibly sourced materials. His approach rejects traditional seasonality, instead offering garments designed for longevity, with complimentary services for alterations and redesigns to extend product life. McDowell hosted London Fashion Week's first Swap Shop and collaborates with brand partners to develop circular solutions, including 'Reimagine' collections that utilize deadstock fabrics and promote sustainable fashion education.

McDowell's work includes collaborations with artists and public figures such as Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Keira Knightley. His collections, showcased at London Fashion Week, are known for their use of unconventional materials, voluminous silhouettes, and dynamic prints. McDowell has also partnered with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for immersive runway presentations. His designs and initiatives have been featured in Vogue, WWD, and The Guardian.

McDowell has been recognized in the Forbes Europe 30 Under 30 and received the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design. He has spoken at the United Nations headquarters in New York City on sustainability in fashion, aligning his practice with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals such as responsible consumption and production, climate action, and gender equality.

McDowell has served as sustainability ambassador and designer in residence for Jimmy Choo Academy. He continues to advocate for closed-loop business models and the evolution of the fashion designer's role, mentoring emerging talent and encouraging industry-wide dialogue on sustainable luxury and circular fashion.
