Patricia Benner

Patricia E. Benner, R.N., Ph.D., F.A.A.N., is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing. She holds an extensive academic record, having earned a B.A. in Nursing from Pasadena College, an A.A. in Nursing from Pasadena City College, an M.S. in Medical-Surgical Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing, and a Ph.D. in Education, Stress, Coping, and Health from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Education.

Throughout her career, Benner has held numerous key positions. She held roles as a staff nurse in various hospitals across the United States before advancing to research and teaching roles at the University of California. Notably, she was a research associate and later an associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing. Patricia also served as the Chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and held Thelma Shobe Endowed Chair in Ethics and Spirituality.

Benner has been recognized with numerous honors and awards for her contributions to nursing education and research. These include the President's Scholar at Pasadena College, the American Legion Nursing Scholarship, and various Book of the Year Awards from the American Journal of Nursing. Her influential work, "From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice," garnered significant acclaim and was instrumental in shaping nursing curricula worldwide. She was honored as a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing in 2011.
