Oren Etzioni

Dr. Oren Etzioni is recognized for his contributions to artificial intelligence research, academic leadership, and technology entrepreneurship. Etzioni earned a bachelor's degree in computer science from Harvard University and a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University under the supervision of Tom M. Mitchell. He joined the University of Washington faculty after completing his PhD, where he is Professor Emeritus. At the University of Washington, Etzioni contributed to advancements in meta-search, online comparison shopping, machine reading, and open information extraction. He has published more than 200 technical papers and received Test of Time Awards for two of his papers. Etzioni's H-index of 100 reflects significant impact in the AI research community.

Etzioni partnered with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen to serve as the founding chief executive officer of the Allen Institute for AI (AI2), an artificial intelligence research institute focused on AI for the common good. During his tenure, AI2 expanded to over 200 team members, and its researchers published nearly 700 papers in venues such as AAAI, ACL, CVPR, NeurIPS, and ICLR, with multiple papers earning special-recognition awards. AI2 developed resources for the AI community, including the AllenNLP library, Semantic Scholar, and conservation platforms EarthRanger and Skylight. Etzioni contributed to the creation of the Semantic Scholar search engine, which leverages AI to help researchers navigate scientific literature.

In addition to his academic and institutional roles, Etzioni has founded or co-founded several AI companies, including Farecast, acquired by Microsoft, and Decide.com, acquired by eBay. His work has been recognized with honors such as GeekWire's Hire of the Year, Seattle's Geek of the Year, the Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Lecture Award, the IJCAI Distinguished Paper Award, election to the AAAI Fellows program, and the National Science Foundation National Young Investigator Award. Etzioni published a "Hippocratic Oath for artificial intelligence practitioners" in TechCrunch, reflecting his commitment to AI ethics. He has contributed commentary on AI to The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, Wired, and Nature, and has advised the White House on artificial intelligence policy.

Etzioni has addressed the challenges of AI-driven disinformation, founding TrueMedia.org, a nonprofit technology organization that uses AI to identify manipulated media and AI-based forgeries across social media platforms. He has raised concerns about large-scale disinformation campaigns enabled by AI agents. Etzioni serves as co-founder of AI agent startup Vercept, founder and technical director of the AI2 Incubator, and venture partner at Madrona, continuing his work in artificial intelligence research, entrepreneurship, and public advocacy.
