Orel Hershiser

Orel Hershiser is a right-handed pitcher who spent 18 seasons in Major League Baseball, compiling a career record of 204 wins and 2,014 strikeouts. Drafted in the 17th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers out of Bowling Green State University, Hershiser became known for his competitive approach on the mound. Dodgers Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda gave him the nickname Bulldog to encourage a tougher mentality, a moniker that became closely associated with his playing style and reputation in professional baseball.

Hershiser's career peaked during a season in which he set a major league record by pitching 59 consecutive scoreless innings, surpassing Don Drysdale's previous mark. That year, he became the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award, the League Championship Series MVP, and the World Series MVP in a single season. He won 23 games, led the majors with 15 complete games and eight shutouts, and was named the Cy Young Award winner by unanimous vote. In the World Series, he posted a 2-0 record with a 1.00 ERA and 17 strikeouts as the Dodgers defeated the Oakland Athletics. Hershiser is a three-time All-Star, a Gold Glove Award recipient, and a Silver Slugger Award winner. Hershiser faced adversity after undergoing reconstructive shoulder surgery that sidelined him for an entire season.
