Olafur Eliasson

Olafur Eliasson is an Icelandic-Danish artist known for sculptures and large-scale installations that utilize elemental materials such as light, water, air, and temperature to explore human perception and environmental awareness. After studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Eliasson moved to Berlin and established Studio Olafur Eliasson, which includes a multidisciplinary team of craftspeople, architects, archivists, researchers, programmers, art historians, and specialized technicians. His work focuses on the interplay between viewer perception and sensory experience, with installations that evolve as audiences interact with them.

Eliasson's career features a series of influential works in contemporary art and environmental design. He represented Denmark at the Venice Biennale with "The Blind Pavilion" and created "The Weather Project" at Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, which attracted significant public attention. Architectural projects such as "Your Rainbow Panorama" at ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum and "Fjordenhus" in Vejle, Denmark, demonstrate his integration of art and architecture. His retrospective, "Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson," was exhibited at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Modern Art and PS1 in New York, The Dallas Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.

Eliasson has addressed environmental issues through public installations like "Ice Watch," created with geologist Minik Rosing, which brought glacial ice from Greenland to urban centers to highlight climate change. He co-founded "Little Sun" with engineer Frederik Ottesen to provide solar-powered lighting in off-grid communities and promote renewable energy access. Little Sun has delivered clean power and light to millions in Sub-Saharan Africa, expanded educational opportunities, and contributed to reductions in CO2 emissions. Eliasson was appointed as a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador for climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals.

In addition to his art and environmental initiatives, Eliasson has contributed to academia and architecture. Alongside German architect Sebastian Behmann, he founded Studio Other Spaces, focusing on projects at the intersection of art and architecture. Eliasson has served as a professor at Berlin University of the Arts and as an adjunct professor at the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design in Addis Ababa. He received the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT, and his work is included in the collections of major institutions such as Museum of Modern Art in New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and Kunstmuseum Basel.

Eliasson continues to expand his practice internationally. His exhibition "OPEN" at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles featured site-specific installations and recent works exploring perception, geometry, and natural phenomena. The traveling retrospective "Your Curious Journey" has been presented at Singapore Art Museum, Auckland Art Gallery, and Taipei Fine Arts Museum, among other venues. Through public installations and gallery exhibitions, Eliasson maintains a significant presence in contemporary art, environmental art, and sustainable design.
