Nymphia Wind

Nymphia Wind is a Taiwanese-American drag performer, dressmaker, and visual artist recognized for her contributions to contemporary drag and LGBTQ representation. Wind earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Atelier and Tailoring from University for the Creative Arts in the United Kingdom, where she began performing as a drag queen and became active in nightclubs and events. She later performed at drag shows in Taipei before relocating to New York to further her career. Wind, who refers to herself as Banana Buddha, creates most of her costumes, often incorporating references to her Asian heritage.

Wind was crowned the winner of season 16 of "RuPaul's Drag Race," becoming the first East Asian winner of the franchise. The season finale set a ratings record, with significant viewership growth in the 18-34 demographic. During her time on the show, Wind never landed in the bottom two, won three challenges, and secured the Ball challenge before being named America's Next Drag Superstar. Her finale performance featured a coat with a bubble tea pattern and a balloon reveal symbolizing boba pearls, highlighting her cultural roots.

Prior to her international recognition, Wind built a résumé in Taiwan and New York, winning the NYX Face Award Taiwan and Make a Diva Season 2 in Taiwan. She produced her first show, Bye Bye Nymphia~ Farewell Drag Show, in Taipei. The documentary Leo & Nymphia was completed and nominated for Best Cinematography at the Golden Bell Awards. Wind also won the competition Mother Season 2 in Brooklyn and released songs on Spotify, including "Power" with the cast of "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 16 and "Queen of Wind."

Wind's achievements have been acknowledged by Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen, and she has performed at Taiwan's presidential office. Wind and the House of Wind represented Taiwan with the performance Formosan Follies at the Cultural Olympiad in Paris. She became the second Drag Race winner and contestant to appear on a cover of Vogue after Violet Chachki. Wind has been listed in the arts category on Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia, included on the Out100 as one of 100 influential LGBTQ people, and received the Harvard Undergraduate Foreign Policy Initiative's inaugural Changemaker of the Year award.

Wind's approach to drag is rooted in her Taiwanese heritage, incorporating elements of cultural significance and aesthetics into her performances. She describes drag as an empowering art form that encourages authenticity, particularly within Asian communities. Wind creates custom fashion pieces, performs internationally, and advocates for Asian queer representation in the drag community. Her work blends high-concept artistry, cultural storytelling, and performance, contributing to the global evolution of drag culture.
