Noubar Afeyan

Noubar Afeyan is a serial entrepreneur, inventor, and leader in the biotechnology industry whose work has significantly influenced the life sciences sector. Afeyan entered biotechnology during its early development as both an academic field and an industry, completing his doctoral work in biochemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Inspired by a meeting with David Packard, Afeyan became an entrepreneur, starting his first biotechnology company and founding or co-founding five additional companies within a decade. Prior to founding Flagship Pioneering, he was the founder and CEO of PerSeptive Biosystems, a company in bio-instrumentation that grew to $100 million in annual revenues. After PerSeptive's acquisition by Perkin Elmer/Applera Corporation, Afeyan became senior vice president and chief business officer of Applera, where he initiated and oversaw the creation of Celera Genomics.

Afeyan is the founder and CEO of Flagship Pioneering and co-founder and board chairman of Moderna. Flagship Pioneering, established as a platform for entrepreneurial scientists, focuses on developing innovative solutions to challenges in human health and sustainability. The company has developed more than 100 scientific ventures, resulting in over $100 billion in aggregate value, thousands of patents and patent applications, and more than 50 drugs in clinical development. During the 1990s, Afeyan's work with startups led him to develop the concept of "parallel entrepreneurship," which involves forming multiple new companies simultaneously.

Afeyan co-founded Moderna with the goal of utilizing messenger RNA technology to address life-threatening diseases. When a global health crisis emerged, Moderna produced a prototype for a COVID-19 vaccine, partnered with the National Institutes of Health to test it, and manufactured millions of doses, contributing to a rapid vaccine rollout. Moderna later achieved the largest initial public offering in the biotechnology industry. Afeyan also announced that Moderna would not enforce its patent rights against those using its patents to produce COVID-19 vaccines. The mRNA vaccine technology developed by Moderna is now being applied to cancer and other diseases.

Afeyan's contributions have been recognized across the scientific and business communities. He accepted the National Medal of Technology and Innovation on behalf of Moderna, awarded for advancing mRNA vaccine technology to combat a global pandemic. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, received a Technology Pioneer award from the World Economic Forum, and was presented with the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Afeyan has served as a senior lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management and as a lecturer at Harvard Business School. He delivered the commencement address for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, advising graduates to embrace uncertainty and lead with imagination.

In addition to his scientific and entrepreneurial work, Afeyan is active in philanthropy and humanitarian initiatives. His efforts include involvement with the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, FAST Foundation, and UWC Dilijan School. He teaches and speaks globally on topics such as entrepreneurship, innovation, economic development, biological engineering, new medicines, and renewable energy. An advocate for the contributions of immigrants to economic and scientific progress, Afeyan received the Golden Door Award from the International Institute of New England in recognition of his contributions to American society as a U.S. citizen of foreign birth. His journey from refugee to scientist and entrepreneur positions him as a prominent voice on innovation, resilience, and the impact of science.
