Nicholas Lalla is an urbanist, executive leader, and author focused on expanding innovation ecosystems to support economic development in cities across the United States. Working at the intersection of economic development and emerging technology, Lalla has developed solutions addressing inclusive growth, innovation, and workforce challenges. He completed undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, earned a certificate from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and received a master's degree in African and African American Studies from Cornell University. He also completed executive leadership training at Dartmouth Tuck School of Business.
Lalla began his career as a strategy consultant at Deloitte and as an analyst at Urban Land Institute, where he launched a national resilience program for cities addressing climate change. He later joined the New York City Economic Development Corporation, where he launched Cyber NYC, described by The New York Times as "among the nation's most ambitious cybersecurity initiatives." This $30 million initiative established Lalla as a prominent figure in tech-driven urban economic development.
Lalla founded Tulsa Innovation Labs to help Tulsa, Oklahoma transition from its oil and gas legacy to a technology-driven economy. He led the development of the region's first tech-led economic development strategy, raised over $200 million, and contributed to the creation of thousands of technology jobs. Tulsa Innovation Labs received both the Build Back Better Regional Challenge and Tech Hubs grants from the U.S. Department of Commerce, making Tulsa one of only two cities nationwide to secure both awards. The organization focused on virtual health, energy technology, advanced air mobility, and cybersecurity, leveraging Tulsa's industrial strengths to position the city within the innovation economy.
Lalla is the founder and managing principal of Urban Reinvention Strategies LLC, a consultancy serving public, private, and social sector clients. His work challenges the notion that innovation clusters are limited to major coastal cities, demonstrating that mid-sized cities can develop their own technology sectors. HarperCollins published his book "Reinventing the Heartland," which outlines a ten-step action plan for building inclusive innovation economies in American cities.
Lalla's writing has appeared in Wired, Fortune, HuffPost, Newsweek, Fast Company, and Stanford Social Innovation Review. He has spoken at conferences including South by Southwest, CyberTech-Tel Aviv, MIT Solve U.S. Equity Summit, Fast Company Innovation Festival, Stanford Nonprofit Management Institute, and Jobs for the Future Horizons conference. Lalla is recognized for translating complex economic and policy concepts into actionable strategies for urban innovation and inclusive economic growth.
