Neil Leach

Neil Leach is a British architect, theorist, and writer known for his work at the intersection of architecture, critical theory, and emerging technology. Leach holds a Master of Arts degree and a Diploma of Architecture from the University of Cambridge, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Nottingham. His academic career began with a focus on the Italian Renaissance, including a translation from Latin of Leon Battista Alberti's treatise, published as "On the Art of Building in Ten Books." Leach later shifted to contemporary architectural theory, with a particular interest in Continental Philosophy and its influence on architectural thinking. His edited volume, "Rethinking Architecture: A Reader in Cultural Theory," compiles writings by influential twentieth-century thinkers such as Jacques Derrida, Martin Heidegger, Michel Foucault, Jean Baudrillard, and Gilles Deleuze. His monograph "The Anaesthetics of Architecture," published by MIT Press, critiques contemporary design culture. Other works include "Camouflage" and "Architecture and Revolution: Contemporary Perspectives on Central and Eastern Europe."

Leach has taught at architecture schools including the Architectural Association, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Columbia GSAPP, Cornell University, and SCI-Arc. He directs the Doctor of Design program at Florida International University and holds professorships at the European Graduate School and Tongji University, where he serves as a "Gao Feng" professor and PhD supervisor. Leach has contributed to China's architectural community, directing the American Academy in China and co-curating exhibitions at the Architecture Biennial Beijing and in Shanghai. His publications include more than 40 books on architectural theory and digital design, translated into multiple languages including Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian.

Leach is recognized for his research on artificial intelligence in architecture. He is the author of "Architecture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: An Introduction to AI for Architects" and co-editor of "Machine Hallucinations: Architecture and Artificial Intelligence." As a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts Fellow and co-recipient of NASA grants, Leach has contributed to the development of robotic 3D printing technologies for lunar and Martian construction. He is co-founder of DigitalFUTURES, an online educational platform for computational design and robotic fabrication. Leach is a member of Academia Europaea and lectures internationally on architectural theory, digital design, and artificial intelligence in architecture.
