
Nathalie Tocci is an Italian political scientist and international relations expert whose career has focused on European foreign policy. Her expertise includes political science, international relations, European integration, foreign policy, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, transatlantic relations, multilateralism, conflict resolution, energy, climate, and defense. Tocci studied politics, philosophy, and economics at University College, Oxford, and earned an MSc from the London School of Economics, with a dissertation in development studies centered on the political economy of Turkey.
Tocci joined the Istituto Affari Internazionali as research manager, later becoming program manager for European foreign policy, then deputy director and editor of The International Spectator. She became director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali, a leading Italian think tank on international affairs. Tocci also serves as professor of practice at Johns Hopkins University SAIS and senior fellow at the Institute for European Policymaking at Bocconi University.
Tocci has held advisory roles at the highest levels of European Union governance, serving as special advisor to EU high representatives Federica Mogherini and Josep Borrell, where she contributed to the development and implementation of the European Global Strategy. She also served as director of international strategies for Italy's minister for foreign affairs. Tocci has held academic appointments including Pierre Keller visiting professor at the Harvard Kennedy School and Europe's Futures fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences.
Tocci is the author of several books, including "A Green and Global Europe," "Framing the EU's Global Strategy," "Turkey's European Future: Behind the Scenes of America's Influence on EU-Turkey Relations," and "The EU and Conflict Resolution." Her work in European foreign policy has been recognized with the Anna Lindh Award for the study of European foreign policy.
Tocci is a frequent media commentator, contributing op-eds to Politico Europe, La Stampa, and The Guardian, and appearing as a regular panelist on BBC's "The Context." She has published in Foreign Affairs, El PaĆs, and Project Syndicate, and is interviewed by international television and newspaper outlets including Al Jazeera, BBC, Bloomberg, CNN, Euronews, and PBS. Tocci's career combines policy experience, academic research, and media engagement in the fields of geopolitics, European integration, and global strategy.
