Nate Tibbetts Biography
Nate Tibbetts is the head coach of the Phoenix Mercury in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Tibbetts played college basketball at the University of South Dakota, where he distinguished himself as a guard and finished as the school’s all-time assist leader. He started his coaching career right after college, working as an assistant at the University of Sioux Falls. He then moved into the professional ranks, serving with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NAIA before moving up to the NBA D-League (now G League), where he was an assistant and then head coach with the Skyforce, and later head coach of the Tulsa 66ers. After success in the G League, Tibbetts joined the NBA full-time: first with the Cleveland Cavaliers (2011-12), then with the Portland Trail Blazers (2013-2021)—including a stint as associate head coach—and most recently with the Orlando Magic before taking the Phoenix job. Under his leadership, Phoenix reached the WNBA Finals in 2025.
Tibbetts comes from a strong basketball family: his father, Fred Tibbetts, was a long-time girls’ high school coach in South Dakota with a storied career, including multiple state championships.
