Natalie Coughlin, a twelve-time Olympic medalist, has left an indelible mark in the world of competitive swimming, securing a total of sixty medals in major international competitions. Her accomplishments include twenty-five gold, twenty-two silver, and thirteen bronze medals spanning the Olympics, World Championships, Pan Pacific Championships, and Pan American Games. Notably, she was the first woman to swim the 100-meter backstroke (long course) in less than one minute. Coughlin's history-making continued during the 2008 Summer Olympics as she became the first U.S. female athlete in modern Olympic history to win six medals in one Olympiad and the first woman ever to win a 100-meter backstroke gold in two consecutive Olympics.
Aside from her victories in the pool, Coughlin has also been recognized for her leadership roles. She served as co-captain of the US women's swimming team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. After taking an 18-month break, she returned to competition at the 2010 Conoco Phillips Summer Nationals. Further showcasing her commitment to the sport, in 2023, she was elected vice-chair and chair-elect for the board of directors of USA Swimming, a position she will hold until 2029. Additionally, Coughlin has been inducted into both the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
Equally impressive is Coughlin's ventures outside of competitive swimming. She has worked as an in-studio host for MSNBC during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Additionally, she has appeared on several television shows, including "Iron Chef America," "Dancing with the Stars," and Food Network's "Chopped Sport Stars." She has also authored a book titled "Golden Girl" and made appearances in the 2012 "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue" and the 2015 ESPN The Magazine "The Body Issue." Coughlin's diverse experiences, coupled with her athletic prowess, emphasize her value as a public speaker.
