Mustafa Suleyman

Mustafa Suleyman is a serial entrepreneur, author, and executive whose career has shaped the artificial intelligence and machine learning landscape. Suleyman co-founded DeepMind Technologies, an AI and machine learning company, where he served as chief product officer. DeepMind was acquired by Google for a reported £400 million, marking Google's largest acquisition in Europe at that time. Following the acquisition, Suleyman became head of applied AI at DeepMind, overseeing the integration of the company's technology across a range of Google products.

During his tenure, DeepMind achieved significant breakthroughs, including the development of AlphaGo, the AI system that defeated world champion Go player Lee Sedol, a pivotal moment in AI history. Suleyman also contributed to implementing AI-driven energy efficiency solutions in Google's data centers, reducing cooling energy usage by up to 40 percent.

Suleyman established DeepMind Ethics & Society, a research unit focused on studying the real-world impacts of AI and promoting ethical practices among technologists. He is a founding co-chair of the Partnership on AI, an organization that brings together companies such as Amazon, Apple, DeepMind, Meta, Google, IBM, and Microsoft to study and develop best practices for AI technologies and to advance public understanding of AI.

After leaving DeepMind, Suleyman joined Greylock Partners as a venture partner and co-founded Inflection AI, an AI lab venture with Reid Hoffman. Inflection AI launched a chatbot named "Pi" for Personal Intelligence, designed to remember past conversations and build relationships with users, with the goal of serving as a digital chief of staff.

Suleyman was appointed Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft AI, the company's consumer AI unit. In this role, he leads a division that includes major consumer AI products such as Copilot, Bing, GroupMe, MSN, and Edge, with a focus on building advanced AI models and creating AI companions for users. Under Suleyman's leadership, Microsoft AI has shifted its strategy to prioritize the development of Human Superintelligence, aiming to create advanced AI capabilities that serve people and humanity. He has also established an in-house MAI Superintelligence Team, recruiting researchers from leading AI organizations including Google DeepMind, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

Beyond his executive roles, Suleyman is recognized as a public intellectual on the opportunities and challenges of AI. He co-authored "The Coming Wave: Technology, Power and the 21st Century's Greatest Dilemma" with Michael Bhaskar, a book examining the transformative and potentially perilous impact of advanced technologies, particularly AI and synthetic biology. The book was shortlisted for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award. Suleyman has delivered widely viewed talks, including a TED talk outlining a vision for the future of artificial intelligence and addressing the challenges and hopes associated with the technology.

Suleyman's influence in the AI industry has been acknowledged with several honors. He was appointed a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) and received the Silicon Valley Visionary Award. Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in artificial intelligence. In addition to his work at Microsoft, Suleyman serves on the board of The Economist and is a senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School. He is active in the debate over AI ethics, advocating for accountability among technologists and encouraging the technology industry to prioritize social responsibility alongside fiduciary duties.
