Morgan Neville

Morgan Neville is a documentary filmmaker known for his work exploring music, culture, and the arts. Before transitioning to nonfiction filmmaking, Neville worked as a journalist in San Francisco and New York City, contributing to outlets including The Nation, Pacific News Service, and Pacifica Radio. He made the move to film in the early 1990s and founded Tremolo Productions.

Neville has created documentaries about prominent figures in music, including Ray Charles, Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, and the Rolling Stones. His early projects include "The Cool School," a feature-length survey of artists at Los Angeles's Ferus Gallery narrated by Jeff Bridges, and "Troubadours," which examines the careers of James Taylor and Carole King and premiered at Sundance.

His documentary "20 Feet from Stardom," which highlights backup singers behind major musical acts, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Neville's film "Best of Enemies," focusing on the debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley, was shortlisted for the Academy Award and won an Emmy Award. "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" offers a portrait of Fred Rogers and became one of the highest-grossing biographical documentaries, earning multiple honors including the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary.

Neville has received nominations for six additional Grammy Awards for films such as "Piece by Piece," "Shangri-La," "Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story," "Muddy Waters: Can't Be Satisfied," "Johnny Cash's America," and "The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble." His accolades include multiple Grammy Awards, Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Peabody Award, reflecting his contributions to documentary filmmaking.

His projects include "Piece by Piece," an animated documentary about Pharrell Williams; the Emmy-nominated "STEVE! (Martin) a documentary in 2 pieces" for Apple TV+; "The Saint of Second Chances" for Netflix; and "Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with Dave Letterman" for Disney+. Neville has also released documentaries on Paul McCartney, Lorne Michaels, and the movies of 1975, establishing his reputation as a filmmaker who examines the lives of cultural icons and explores themes of art, identity, and the human experience.
