Morez Johnson Jr.

Morez Johnson Jr. is a professional basketball player recognized for his impact as a frontcourt presence in college basketball and the NBA. Johnson attended Thornton Township High School in Illinois, where he was named Illinois Mr. Basketball and ranked as the top player in the state and among the top 30 nationally in recruiting rankings. A McDonald's All-American, Johnson entered college basketball with a reputation as a strong rebounder and defensive anchor.

Johnson began his collegiate career at the University of Illinois, playing for the Fighting Illini. During his freshman season, he averaged seven points, nearly seven rebounds, and more than one block per game in limited minutes. After recovering from a wrist injury sustained against Michigan State, Johnson returned to action in the Big Ten tournament. He then transferred to the University of Michigan, where he played for head coach Dusty May. At Michigan, Johnson became a productive big man, contributing significantly in scoring, rebounding, and defense.

In his sophomore season at Michigan, Johnson appeared in 40 games, averaging 13.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 0.7 steals in 25.1 minutes per game. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors, was named to the league's all-defensive team, and was selected for the NCAA All-Tournament team. During the NCAA tournament, Johnson recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds on perfect shooting in the first round, joining a select group of players in tournament history to achieve that feat. Michigan won the national championship and tied the Big Ten record for single-season wins, with Johnson earning a spot on the All-Final Four tournament team.

Johnson has also competed internationally, representing the United States national team at the FIBA Under-18 AmeriCup and the FIBA Under-19 World Cup, winning gold medals in both tournaments. In the FIBA Under-19 World Cup, he started six of seven games and contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds in the championship game against Germany.

After his sophomore year, Johnson was selected ninth overall in the NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. His performance at the NBA Combine highlighted his athleticism and potential at the professional level. Johnson reunited with his college coach, Dusty May, who became the Mavericks' head coach. Scouts describe Johnson as a physically imposing, high-motor forward with a strong defensive foundation, lateral mobility, and a 7-foot-3 wingspan that enhances his ability to contest shots, disrupt plays, and rebound effectively.
