Mo Alie Cox

Mohamed “Mo” Alie-Cox, born September 19, 1993, in Alexandria, Virginia, has built a remarkable career as an NFL tight end for the Indianapolis Colts, following an unconventional path from college basketball to professional football.

A natural athlete, Mo excelled in multiple sports but initially set his sights on basketball. At Middleburg Academy, he averaged nearly 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, earning all-state first-team honors. He went on to attend Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) on a basketball scholarship, where he became a pivotal force for the Rams. Over four seasons, he started 103 games, scored 1,092 points, collected 663 rebounds, and blocked 255 shots. His commanding defensive presence and signature shot-blocking earned him the chant “Mo Says No” from fans. During his tenure, he helped lead VCU to its first Atlantic 10 Conference championship and gained a reputation as one of the school’s most efficient shooters.

While building his athletic legacy, Mo also excelled academically. He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2015 and followed it with a master’s degree in 2017, both from VCU’s Wilder School. His dedication to education and personal growth made him a fitting choice as the commencement speaker for VCU’s May 2023 ceremony, where he encouraged graduates to embrace hard work, resilience, and belief in themselves—values he had relied on throughout his own journey.

Despite not playing organized football since early high school, Mo signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He faced early setbacks, including an injury that placed him on injured reserve, but steadily worked his way onto the active roster. His breakout moment came with a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch in 2018, announcing his arrival as a reliable contributor. Over his NFL career, he has recorded over a hundred receptions, more than 1,400 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns, cementing his role as a trusted target on the field.
